What I realised about feedback from my hairdresser

I was at the hairdresser's recently, listening to the stylist next to me teach a tween how to use a curling iron.

She said, “The most important thing is to let it cool down.”

That stayed with me.

So I Googled it, and she was right. Heat softens the hair, making it easier to shape. But it is the cooling process that locks that shape in. It smooths the cuticle, reduces frizz, and helps the style last.

Without the cool down, the effect can fall flat.

The same is true for feedback.

In the Feedback Fitness Framework, we need all three stages:

The Warm Up prepares the conversation.
The Work Out is where the feedback is offered.
The Cool Down is where the learning settles and change occurs.

Too often, leaders focus only on the moment of offering feedback. They prepare what to say, say it, and move on.

But what happens next matters just as much.

The Cool Down Conversation is so important.

It gives people space to reflect, regain perspective, and make sense of what they have heard. It allows time for implementation - so the change can take place. It helps useful feedback stick.

Feedback Fitness is not only about handling the heat of the conversation.

It is about what happens after.
