Feedback in a Hybrid World: Don’t Let Distance Get in the Way

Feedback in a Hybrid World: Don’t Let Distance Get in the Way

As you’ve likely experienced, the traditional workplace has changed dramatically. Remote and hybrid work arrangements are now standard across many organisations. While these flexible models have offered employees greater autonomy, they’ve also introduced new challenges for leaders, especially when it comes to feedback conversations.

One of the biggest challenges I hear from leaders is this:

“How do we have feedback conversations when we’re rarely in the same room together?”

Often, leaders wait until there’s a face-to-face meeting for feedback conversations. Others avoid feedback altogether, hoping the issue will resolve itself. When feedback is delayed or avoided, growth opportunities are lost, and confusion or frustration can quietly grow within your team.

In today’s workplace, where there is a culture of Feedback Fitness, feedback conversations mean adapting to the situation and having the flexibility to respond to the context.  It means mixing up the way in which feedback conversations take place.

🤝 Tip: The future of feedback will involve adapting to remote and hybrid work scenarios by leveraging various communication methods for feedback, including in-person, online, and by phone.

You CAN have feedback conversations online, or over the phone, as long as you have an agreed-upon understanding of how this would work:

  • Discuss this in your Warm Up Conversation

  • Make sure you offer feedback in a variety of ways (ie, not just online).

  • Have Cool Down Conversations.

When you approach feedback conversations with clarity and care, online meetings, phone calls, and even voice messages can be powerful tools. Feedback doesn’t lose its impact when offered virtually; what matters is your intention, the structure of the conversation, and your ability to connect, even across a screen.
